A lot of us are really itching to get out in the garden and putter around, but don’t lose hope in your old tools. Perhaps with a little TLC they can be brought back to life. Mark Gibbs of The Great Outdoors joined us in the studio to share tips on spring cleaning your gardening tools & dividing clumping ground cover plants.   • Use some steel wool to buff and scrubb off any rust or sap
  • Sharpen the blades
  • Tighten any loose fittings
  • Ttreat the fittings with 4 way oil


  • Root prune the Clumping plant you are choosing to divide-get a 4″ diameter clump
  • Remove as much soil as possible from the clump of roots by rinsing it off with water to expose as much of the tubers in the crown of the plant as possible
  • Use your pruners to cut through the sides of the tubers on the root system dividing it into 4 equal clumps
  • Space them 4″ apart and treat them with a Liquid root stimulator
  • If you notice foliar die back cut back the tops by 2/3, that will help them settle down and regenerate new growth
