PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — A local fire department hopes new training could help them respond to emergencies more effectively.

Commanders with Travis County ESD No. 2 in Pflugerville received training on the Blue Card system today—the first fire department to use it in Travis County. Blue Card software digitally simulates a variety of fire scenarios so that commanders can practice radio communications as they assess the evolving situation, direct personnel and manage resources.

On Thursday, they ran through several scenarios. One included how to respond to a fire deep inside a large warehouse.

“It helps create critical incident decision making which is actually one of the most common themes found in line of duty death reports,” Captain Michael Anderson with the Pflugerville Fire Department. “We’re using that information, that experience to provide for safer working environment for our own personnel.”

The four battalion chiefs and seven captains who make up PFD recently completed 50 hours of online training from Blue Card.
