BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — A school bus driver was cited Wednesday morning after a crash that injured several students on Farm to Market 535 near Cedar Creek Parkway.

Bastrop Independent School District says 25 students from Cedar Creek Intermediate and Cedar Creek Middle School were on board when a truck collided with the bus just before 8 a.m. Two students were hurt in the crash and transported to a hospital to treat their minor injuries. The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office says another student with minor injuries was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. Nurses from Cedar Creek Intermediate and Middle School evaluated the rest of the students.

Daniel Aguilera lives nearby and heard the screeching sound of the crash before walking out and seeing the children getting off the bus. He said EMS response was quick as they tried to assess possible injuries.

“They had ice packs and stuff. They were checking them out,” said Aguilera. “They weren’t going to let them go anywhere without checking them out.”

The district said parents were informed about the crash immediately. Some of them showed up on scene according to Aguilera.

“They were worried and they were kind of angry because they didn’t know what was going on. Police officers weren’t letting them go through.”

Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office say the bus driver, Trevor Lange, who is contracted through Goldstar Transit, was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic. As the bus was planning to turn, a pickup truck hit the side of the bus.

“We work really hard to make sure our drivers and staff are trained to deal in any situation that might involved the safety of our students,” said Bastrop ISD spokesperson, Emily Parks. The district will conduct an internal investigation into the crash which could determine punishment. In the meantime, Lange will not drive until the investigation is completed and must go through the training process again before ever driving a bus for the district again.

A KXAN investigation into seat belts on Texas school buses revealed that among the 110 Bastrop ISD buses, there are zero shoulder seat belts and 19 lap belts total. The bus involved in the crash did not have seat belts.
