AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Monday, candidates for the March 1 primary had to file their campaign finance reports with the Texas Ethics Commission. After longtime Democrat Elliot Naishtat retired, seven candidates quickly organized to run for his seat.

Here are some things to take note of:

Big Loans: Rep. Naishtat didn’t give them much notice and these seven candidates had to create a political operations in just a few weeks. This caused many of the candidates to take out tens of thousand dollars worth of loans; Aspen Dunaway with $20,000, Gina Hinojosa with $75,000 and Blake Rocap with $100,000. Heather Way took out the largest loan of $105,000, according to the report.

PACS and lawmakers like Hinojosa: The former Austin Independent School District School Board president has spent the most money out of all of them. More than any other candidate, her donations came from organizations and people already connected in politics. Her father, Chair of Texas Democrats Gilberto Hinojosa gave her $3,000. She recieved $2,500 from the Campaign of Eddie Lucio III, another Harlingen Representative who does not have a primary or general election opponent. AFSCME and Texas Parent PAC gave her thousands as well.

Without loans, candidates have had a hard time raising money: Compared to Way, Rocap and Hinojosa, the others are far behind in pure dollar figures. Twenty-three-year-old Huey Rey Fischer hopes to mobilize his age group and bring out the student vote. He still spent $25,000 on the campaign. Aspen Dunaway, Kenton Johnson and Matt Shrum are all accomplished in their own right but hope random voting and/or name recognition puts them into the runoff.
