New way to pay, using selfies

Pay with a pic, Mastercard fraud prevention technology

AUSTIN (KXAN) — You can finally find a use for the hundreds of selfies you take each day. Mastercard wants to use selfies to help prevent fraud.

The company says selfies and fingerprint scans are safer than typed passwords. Mastercard is launching a new technology so you can use selfies to approve online purchases.

If you want to use your pic to pay, download the Mastercard identity check app. It has you take a selfie each time you purchase something online. Your face or fingerprint will be scanned to prove that it is you spending the money and not a scammer. The app even makes you blink before you snap your selfie to ensure that it is a real person taking the pic as your shop.

The next step for fraud prevention technology Mastercard is researching would be using your heartbeat and scans of your eyes to authenticate purchases. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
