AUSTIN (KXAN) — The 25th annual Austin Marathon and Half Marathon kicks off Sunday with a marathon expo running all weekend long. More than 15,000 runners are expected to participate.
While officials spend hours organizing for the big day, there’s also plenty of hands on deck to help out. Roughly 200 volunteers will help out including about 90 medical staff.
Seton is the official medical provider for the marathon. There will be 26 nurse stations along the race route as well as an emergency medical tent set up to help with any problems along the way.
One of the participants Sunday is cancer survivor, Alan Leonard. Diagnosed with bone cancer at age 20, Leonard didn’t let the amputation of his leg stop him.
“I have been a cancer survivor for 10 years now, and so it came back a few years ago, but it hasn’t stopped me yet,” said Leonard.
Running for one of the 25 non-profits, Leonard hopes to increase awareness for Texas 4000, which raises funds for cancer research. The organization sends University of Texas students on a 4,000 mile bicycle ride; Leonard said his roommate cycled for him when he was diagnosed. Follow Leonard’s journey on his Twitter.
At the Palmer Events Center, you can stop by the Austin Marathon Expo and experience NXP’s Smarter World Tour. There you can climb on board the triple-decker truck and immerse yourself in all-things Internet of Things. The truck has more than 120 demos that let you test drive data aggregators, ADAS, wearables, telepresence robots, myoelectric gesture recognition tech, and more.
The 2016 Marathon Marketplace will have more than 80 vendors selling all sorts of runners’ goodies. You can also get important race info and tips from speakers, shop the vendors and more.
