Some Austin schools face counselor shortage

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Some Texas High School students who need help dealing with life’s problems aren’t getting it because of lack of trained counselors.

Click play on the video above to hear former counselor Nancy Miloy explain the shortage on behalf of the Texas Counselor Association.

Miloy says there should be 1 counselor per 250 students, but some areas have no counselors whatsoever. Some Austin campuses have one counselor for 750 students.

House Bill 18 calls for helping students with college readiness, something Miloy says counselors are especially trained to help. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
