Police: Man lying in street hit, killed by Capital Metro bus

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man is dead after being hit by a Capital Metro bus in East Austin. The deceased has been identified as Thomas Rucker, 42.

Austin police say it happened at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at 1808 Celeste Circle. According to APD Cp. Jeff Barrick, the bus driver did not see the man until it was too late to stop.

Austin-Travis County EMS said Rucker was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:17 a.m. after attempts to revive him.

Witnesses said he was laying in the street moaning when he was hit; wearing a black hoodie and camo pants.

“We don’t know if he was altered on alcohol or drugs or anything but he was lying in the street moaning. How he got there, we have no idea,” said Barrick.

The driver of the bus was not injured in the crash. Police believe the bus was off duty at the time and heading back to the station.
