District 1 holds Open Carry discussion

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Those who live, shop, and work in East Austin had the chance to learn more about open carry Saturday at St. James Missionary Baptist Church.

District 1 Council Member Ora Houston and Dr. B.W. McLendon Sr. met with residents at the church to discuss the new law.

Among the questions asked were how the new law would affect small business owners, community members, and congregations.

“It’s very helpful for all the citizens of Austin to know what the law really is and not just what you hear and say. More town hall meetings like this should be happening all over Austin,” said Sammy Hall, a District 1 resident.

Along with Houston and McLendon, representatives of the Austin Police Department were available to help field the community’s questions.
