NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) — New Braunfels police say a traffic accident on southbound Interstate 35 this morning highlights the importance of moving over and slowing down when you see an emergency vehicle with its lights on.

Friday morning, a New Braunfels police cruiser blocking a lane of traffic, due to a crash ahead on the freeway, was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The department says the officer was not in the patrol car at the time of the crash and that the driver of the oncoming vehicle was not injured.

Authorities are reminding drivers that it’s state law to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside with their lights on. If you can’t or it’s unsafe for you to move over into another lane, the law states you need to decrease your speed to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit. If the posted speed limit is less than 25 miles per hour, drive five miles per hour.

In addition to emergency vehicles, the law applies to tow trucks and Texas Department of Transportation vehicles not separated from the roadway. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
