SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – Two men are behind bars after attempting to steal a very large safe and getting caught in the act.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 2 p.m. from a homeowner who got a motion sensor alarm on their cellphone. It happened at the The Regency Mobile Home Park in the 300 block of Woodrose.

Deputies arrived within a minute of the call and, thanks to descriptions provided by the homeowner’s surveillance camera, the suspects were caught in the act. They were struggling to get the safe they had grabbed into their car.

Oscar Perez Jr., 21 and Joel Rene Perez, 20 were caught after a short foot chase. They’re being charged with Burglary of a Habitation.

Jail records show previous charges. Current booking photos were unavailable at time of writing.

Clarification: The Hays County Sheriff’s Office now says one of the men taken into custody was not actually involved. The story has been updated accordingly.
