COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Columbia authorities say a man wanted on a murder charge in Texas shot at officers who were trying to arrest him and was killed when police returned fire.

Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said at a news conference that the shootout happened at an apartment complex Monday morning in a neighborhood several miles east of downtown Columbia.

According to NBC affiliate WISTV, the suspect was wanted in Houston. They have confirmed the suspect was killed during the shootout

Timmons says the suspect suffered what were believed to be life-threatening injuries and was taken to surgery. She says none of the officers were injured.

Richland County sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson says the suspect was working on his car when officers approached. Deputies aren’t releasing his name or details about the murder charge until his family is notified.

A violent fugitive task force made up of Columbia police, federal agents and the State Law Enforcement Division was involved in the arrest. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
