Austin Music Summit making safety preparations for SXSW

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Today the city is holding its first music venue summit, just weeks before South by Southwest begins.

The idea is to bring owners of the city’s music establishments together to talk about safety, security and the noise ordinance. Austin Police and Fire Department will also be there to help venue owners understand how to keep you safe. One safety concern is the amount of people allowed in a venue.

Additionally, police are monitoring that the different rules for each district, like Red River and Rainey Street, are followed.

David Murray, the Sound Engineering Consultant for city of Austin music, said “Each of these areas have different cut off times and decibel allowances so it’s really important for us to help remind them and update them on the ordinance.”

The venue summit takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Mexican American Cultural Center. The public is invited to attend. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
