Austin tech startups square off for charity

AUSTIN (KXAN) – More than a dozen Austin tech startups looked to raise close to $57,000 for various local charities Saturday at the 5th Annual Austin Startup Games.

14 companies including Capital Factory, theCHIVE, Ridescout and uShip all picked charities to receive their donations.

Competitors take part in events including Ping Pong, Foosball, Shuffleboard, Darts, Flip Cup, Beer Pong and MarioKart.

The teams were playing for local charities, but that didn’t fool anyone – Players came to play and wanted to win.

“They all decided hey, we have the best employees because they play these games so we decided to put our money where our mouth is, we decided to add charity to it and it’s grown to this amazing event,” said Gillian Wilson, one of the hosts of Startup Games.

The Austin Startup Games ran through 6 p.m. at the Fair Market at 1100 East 5th Street. Awards were given out later in the evening.

The event was open to the public, with nearly 1,000 attendees coming to the event. The event was free, but a $10 donation at the door was suggested.

By the end of the day the group raised nearly $57,000 for charity on Saturday. In total, $225,000 has been raised since the yearly event began in 2012. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
