Longhorns embrace top 10 challenges ahead

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Two weeks ago, Texas coach Shaka Smart coined “do your job week” for his Longhorn players. While Smart won’t address it directly, Texas can dub the week ahead– top ten week.

Texas faces its toughest test of the season playing two top ten teams in four days with both games on the road.

The top 10 gauntlet begins with sixth-ranked West Virginia on Wednesday night. The Mountaineers are coming off a successful top ten week of their own. West Virginia upset #1 Kansas last Tuesday and lost to #2 Oklahoma this past Saturday.

“If you ask anyone pretty much outside of our program, they would look at us as an underdog in this game…as they should. West Virginia is having a phenomenal year. (I’m) trying to get our guys to understand that’s the way you’re viewed sometimes, but at the same time you’ve got to have the confidence to believe that you can go there and win,” Smart said.

After the trip to Morgantown, Texas travels to #3 Kansas on Saturday to cap off the challenging week. Certainly, the odds are stacked against the Longhorns, but they have been in this position before. The underdog role is just fine. Whether it’s on the road or at home, Texas knows they have to play better than their last time out.

“This game is one where we’re going to have to play better than the last time we played on the road. We’re going to have to play better than the last time we played at home. I think our guys understand that. It’s a challenge, but its also an opportunity because if you can go on the road and play teams like this and you can play well, you can put yourself in a good position,” Smart said.
