PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — A class of 13 recruits are putting on the heavy firefighting gear as part of the evergrowing Pflugerville Fire Department. This week, the department is training its largest group of recruits in nearly 20 years.

On Monday, the group focused on wearing their fire suits and how they should set-up when they arrive at the scene of a fire.

On Tuesday, the group will practice their responsibilities when they are on “outside truck” duty, meaning the tasks that they must complete when they’re outside of a burning building.

“We want to make sure these guys are proficient enough, that when they get off the training, that they are ready to serve the public here in the Pflugerville area,” says Captain Robert Ortiz with the Pflugerville Fire Department. “Not just the City of Pflugerville but the whole common area that we have.”

Approximately 55,000 people live in the City of Pflugerville and the number is expected to rise to 65,000 people by 2020 In 2015, the city added an additional 763 single family homes, which was a 4.4 percent increase from 2014.
