TSA opens new pre-check enrollment office at ABIA

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Getting through the security lines at Austin’s airport and several other airports across the country might become easier Thursday.

The Transportation Security Administration will open its second TSA pre-check office inside ABIA. The first Austin office opened in 2014 in downtown, it has since moved to the HEB Shopping Center in Oak Hill. The idea with the second airport location is to offer travelers a more convienant location.

The TSA pre-check enrollment allows travelers clearance to go through a special line.

“Whether you travel frequently or not, the pre-check allows you to go through security without having to take your shoes or belt off,” said Win Noble, Enrollment Center Operations Manager at MorphoTrust USA. “The process takes less than five minutes to enroll and it can be done in our offices by baggage claim at Austin’s airport.”

To get this clearance it’s a two-step process – an online application and an in-person interview. It’s the second step that led many not to get the pre-check approval because it was an inconvenience.

Prior to the Austin office opening, travelers had to drive to Victoria, two hours away, to complete the interview. In order to get approved for the faster screening process travelers have to fill out an online application that requires a name, date of birth, and address. The in-person interview at the pre-check enrollment office requires getting fingerprinted, presenting a valid ID, and paying an $85 membership fee that is good for five years.

The TSA and ABIA will hold a ceremony for the new office at 10a.m. Thursday.
