ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — A caretaker at a Round Rock Alzheimer’s and extended care facility is accused of stealing from an elderly woman in her care.

The University Village employee charged with the crime, Scota Gaston, was caring for an 87-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.

According to court documents, the facility’s General Manager, Teerria Jones, first reported the stolen rings to police.

Officers were able to trace the theft back to Gaston by searching for leads online, using the names of employees that cared for the victim. Investigators say during an interview with Gaston, she admitted to taking the woman’s rings from a counter, putting them in her pocket and later pawning them at EZ Pawn in Temple.

Police were able to retrieve the rings before they were pawned off. Gaston is charged with theft from the elderly, a third degree felony. The victim’s granddaughter estimated the value of the rings to be more than $2,500.
