AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is celebrating the retirement of one of its K9 officers, Thursday.

“Tex”, a nine-year-old Belgian Malinois, has served with his partner, Senior Police Officer Patrick O’Connor, since 2009. Tex had a total of 73 arrests and served as a Special Operations K9 during his time on the force.

Explaining what he and Tex do in their line of work, O’Connor says, “We play hide and seek. If somebody goes out in the woods and runs from police. It’s our job to use the dog to go look for that person.”

O’Connor says Tex will spend a relaxing retirement at home with his other dogs.

“It’s a great job. It’s fun when you get to work with animals, obviously,” he said. “It beats writing speeding tickets at the end of the day.”
