AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some local students are learning about the upcoming election by holding their own, a few months early.

Middle school students at East Austin College Prep held a mock election Friday. With a little help from the Travis County Tax Office, students were given voter registration certificates.

Students also learned about the proper ID they need at the polls.

They also got an “I voted” sticker, just like a real election. “It’s been amazing seeing the young kids come in and vote. People have just been saying when can I vote, when can I vote, when do we vote?” government teacher Alejandro Johnson said.

The schools want to get the community involved by offering a voter registration drive on January 16.
