TRAVIS COUNTY (KXAN) — Investigators say they’ve found the car connected to a man’s death in eastern Travis County and know who was involved, but there are still many unanswered questions.
The family of 21-year-old Demond “Dee Jay” Jaron Walker of Elgin said they don’t understand why the young man was in the area where his body was found.
“How is it a person who is not even from that town gets hit by a car? How did he get down there? How did he get down to Austin because he definitely didn’t drive himself,” asked TamRon Walker, Dee Jay’s sister.
Authorities found Walker’s body on the side of Sandifer Street in the Austin’s Colony neighborhood late Monday night.
“It hurts so bad because we don’t’ know what happened,” said a tearful Tammy Williams, Walker’s mother.
The Texas Department of Public Safety initially said the death was being investigated as a hit-and-run, but Walker’s injuries did not match the description of being hit by a vehicle. Authorities are calling the case an auto-pedestrian investigation.
Walker’s official cause of death has not been released yet.
A person who lives on Sandifer Street says, around 11:45 p.m. Monday, they heard a loud noise and then saw a dark pick-up truck drive away.
“I just want justice, because he didn’t deserve that,” said TamRon. “It doesn’t matter if they go to prison locked up for life it’s not bringing him back to us,” said Jackie Williams, Dee Jay’s aunt.
The family said Walker had lived in Elgin his entire life and currently lived with his grandmother. They said Monday night the 21 year old went out with four friends, but don’t know why they would have gone to the Austin area.
“People he trusted, hung out with and grew up with may have done this to him, but you know, the vengeance is not the answer, it’s the Lord’s,” said Williams who believes friends were involved.
“My question is why your friends would just leave you or whatever happened, just say something,” said Walker’s mother.
DPS said the case is still under investigation and haven’t released many details. Walker would have been 22 in February and also a father.
“I miss him so much, and it still seems so unreal to me because it just all hasn’t sunk in yet,” explained Alyssa Sandoval, Walker’s pregnant girlfriend. “It hurts me because knowing my son is not going to have his real dad here, but I know I’ll have everybody else to love him.”
Walker’s mother said, “This is devastating because I know he was so excited about being a dad.”
“It just hurts me because it’s my first kid and his too, and we’re experiencing it together and now that they took that experience from him, he’s not even here to see his firstborn come into the world,” said Sandoval.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests in this case.
