BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Authorities in Bastrop County are investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed one person and injured a child near Smithville.
The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened just after 1 p.m. on State Highway 304 near Tiner Cutoff. Initial information indicates the crash involved two pick-up trucks and that a Chevy truck hauling a trailer t-boned a Dodge truck.
A woman identified by BCSO as Jessie Lavern Davis, 60, of Rosanky, died at the scene and a toddler inside the truck was transported to Dell Children’s Hospital by medical helicopter. The girl, who turned two in December, is currently in critical condition. They were both in the Dodge truck.
BCSO said Davis was the toddler’s temporary caretaker.
Philip John, Jr., 23, of Cuero, was arrested by the Texas Highway Patrol at the scene and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault.
“It’s very odd for 1 o’clock on a Monday to have an intoxicated driver,” says DPS Trooper Dane Baker.
Traffic on SH 304 was detoured and drivers were asked to seek an alternate route. After 6:00 p.m., Highway 304 was reopened.
