AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man has been charged with intoxication assault after he allegedly drove drunk through construction cones and hit a worker.

According to Austin police, 35-year-old Esteban Valdez drove while intoxicated on Dec. 30 around 5:29 p.m. Witnesses told police they saw his BMW drive past construction cones hitting and injuring a construction worker at the 600 block of Cardinal Lane.

The worker was seriously injured in the crash and transported to Brackenridge hospital.

In the affidavit police state they believed Valdez to be intoxicated due to his slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and strong odor of alcohol. Additionally police noted that Valdez was stumbling and uncooperative, refusing to answer if he had anything to drink. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
