Austin police arrest 127 drivers as part of ‘No Refusal’

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In the past 10 days, 127 people have been taken into custody for DWI as part of a No Refusal initiative, according to Austin police. The DWI enforcement initiative for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays started on Dec. 18.

Out of the 127 arrests, 48 people took a breathalyzer test, 14 consented to a blood draw and 65 warrants for blood draws were conducted. During a No Refusal, officers can apply for a search warrant to obtain blood from drivers suspected to be impaired who refuse to provide a breath or blood sample.

The DWI initiative ends Sunday, Jan. 3 at 5 a.m.

Recent data from APD shows 63 percent of fatal crashes this year involved drivers who were impaired or believed to be impaired. From January to November, seven drivers were charged with intoxication manslaughter in Austin. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
