BYU calls on Ty Detmer to lead offense

AUSTIN (KXAN) — St. Andrews high school football coach Ty Detmer is going back to his college football days– back to BYU.

Detmer has accepted an offer to become BYU’s offensive coordinator. The 1990 Heisman Trophy winner spent six seasons with St. Andrews, but this will be his first jump in to college coaching. There’s no better place to start than his alma mater.

“My family and I are extremely excited to be part of the football program at BYU again,” Detmer said in a BYU release. “I feel it is the right time to make a move and jump in head first. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Detmer is the best quarterback in program history. His passing and touchdown records still stand in the BYU record books.

Former Texas Longhorn Ramonce Taylor was an assistant coach with Detmer this season at St. Andrews. Taylor wished his co-worker well through social media: “Detmer has a great offensive mind. Learned a lot from him. Congrats Coach D on the new job.”
