AUSTIN (KXAN) — Senator Ted Cruz has launched a fundraising appeal in response to a Washington Post editorial cartoon that depicted his two young daughters as monkeys, NBC News reports.

“My daughters are not FAIR GAME,” the senator from Texas wrote in a fundraising email sent late Tuesday. “I’m sickened… I knew i’d be facing attacks from day one of my campaign, but I never expected anything like this.”

The cartoon portrays Cruz in a Santa outfit with an organ-grinder and daughters Catherine, 4, and Caroline, 7, as monkeys. The cartoon was replaced with a note from Washington Post editorial page editor Fred Hiatt, who said, “I failed to look at this cartoon before it was published. I understand why Ann thought an exception to the policy was warranted in this case, but I do not agree.”

The cartoonist, Ann Telnaes, was unapologetic, posting a link on Twitter to a Cruz campaign video showing him reading Christmas stories to his daughters including titles such as, “How Obamacare Stole Christmas” and “Rudolph the Underemployed Reindeer.” She wrote, “Ted Cruz has put his children in a political ad–don’t start screaming when editorial cartoonists draw them as well.”
