AISD board president stepping down from top spot to run for state rep

Gina Hinojosa

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Independent School District board president Gina Hinojosa is resigning from her position as president effective Tuesday.

She made the emotional announcement during the meeting Monday, but said she will stay on the board as a trustee.

Over the weekend, Hinojosa announced on social media she is running for Texas House District 49 in the March 1 democratic primary. She said the law does not require her to resign as trustee, but she feels stepping down as president is the best thing to do.

She posted on her Facebook page:

“As a longtime supporter of Elliott Naishtat, I know that whoever succeeds him in the Texas House will need to meet the highest standard when it comes to fighting for progressive values.
After working for many years as an attorney and community volunteer to advance equal rights – and especially in my role over the past three years as trustee and now president of the AISD school board – I feel I have the right experience and the right values to live up to Elliott’s legacy and continue his fight.”

Hinojosa said AISD trustee Amber Elenz, who is currently the vice-president, will take over as president. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
