AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s security detail is paid for by taxpayers, and a report has detailed the size of the bill.

The San Antonio Express-News reports Monday that the amount spent on travel costs for Abbott’s security detail totals $174,822.26 for out-of-state trips as of Aug. 31.

The expenses, compiled by the Texas Department of Public Safety, do not include trips to Mexico or Cuba.

Efforts in the Legislature to require officials to pay for their own security costs have failed.

The quarterly report shows travel costs for Abbott’s security detail in his first year as governor included $44,566.69 for a family vacation to Europe and $10,698 for a trip by Mrs. Abbott to California, where the Abbotts’ daughter attends college. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
