AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo gave his take in an interview with the Huffington Post on why Austin is largely immune from mass shootings.

In the interview posted Monday, Acevedo cited the well-equipped and well-trained Austin Police Department as the main reason for the lack of mass shootings. The article states no shooting of four or more people have been recorded in Austin since at least 2009.

“In Austin, in Texas where it’s a culture of gun ownership, there are several things I think we do very well. Number one, we have a police department that is well trained and well equipped,” Acevedo is quoted in the story.

However, Acevedo said it also comes down to “luck,” saying it can happen in any city.
