More patrols will be targeting drunk driving this holiday season

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Department of Public Safety, the Austin Police Department and other agencies will have more patrols on the roadways through the new year to keep drunk drivers off the road.

The ‘Plan While You Can’ campaign urges party-goers to plan a sober ride this holiday season. The Texas Department of Transportation says during the holiday season last year, alcohol played a factor in 2,400 traffic crashes killing more than 100 people in Texas. That marked a nearly 10 percent increase over the previous holiday season.

Trooper Anthony Flores says they don’t want to see those numbers jump again.

“During this particular dates. it’s a combined effort with all our agencies that are going to really target on the areas that areas our committees are traveling in that seem to see as a problem,” says Flores.

TxDOT is also apart of the effort with their interactive “Plan While You Can” trailer.  It’ll tour 11 Texas cities spreading the word about the dangers of drunk driving. You can check it out in person starting Tuesday at the opening of the Trail of Lights. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
