AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are looking for a woman who tried to kidnap a baby girl from her mom’s arms on Monday morning in South Austin. Police say the attempted kidnapping and robbery happened around 8:13 a.m. on Deer Run Drive.
The mom told police she was walking to her car when an older red two-door truck pulled in front of her. She said a heavyset Hispanic woman in her 40s got out of the truck and approached her and demanded she give her the baby. When the victim didn’t comply, the suspect pulled out a knife and attempted to grab the child, police say.
The two women struggled over the baby and the victim said she fell to the ground to cover and protect the child.
KXAN spoke to the mother, who asked to keep her identity anonymous.
“Dame bebé, dame la bebé,” the suspect commanded to her repeatedly.
The mom says she’s frightened to take her baby out of the home now, and that she wants other parents to be alert.
“To keep a lookout for that woman, and be careful with their children,” the mother’s son translated.
Police say the suspect stole some items from the victim and got into the passenger side of the truck and left the scene. The victim was not able to get a look at the driver of the truck. Police say the victim and suspect did not know each other.
