AUSTIN (KXAN) — A house fire in East Austin left one man dead and a woman injured Sunday morning.
According to the Austin Fire Department the fire began at the 1400 block of Ulit Drive at 12:54 p.m. When firefighters arrived on scene they found a 60-year-old woman outside of the home with burns, who told them her son was still inside the home.
A 30-year-old paraplegic man, the woman’s son, was found in the home and pronounced dead at the scene.
“Heavy water attack trying to knock down the bulk of the fire, while other crews attended to our burn patient, crews knocked down some of the fire, assessed the building, and determined the conditions were non-survivable,” said Palmer Buck, division chief for the Austin Fire Department.
According to Austin-Travis County Emergency Services, the woman suffered critical burns and was transported to the burn unit at the San Antonio Military Medical Center.
The victim has not been identified at this time.
Damages are estimated at $120,00 to the house and $40,000 for the contents inside.
