SHERWOOD, Ore. (KOIN) — A local family was reunited with their dog Monday, nearly a year after she was reportedly stolen.

Pippin the Australian Shepherd was taken in front of a Beaverton store on December 14, 2014, Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

“We searched all over and she was just gone,” Cara Esau, who adopted Pippin last year, told KOIN 6 News.

Around 1:30 p.m. Monday, deputies were called to the 18400 block of SW Parrett Mountain Road in Sherwood after receiving a tip.

Upon their arrival, deputies found the dog and a woman who matched the suspect’s description.

Pippin was taken to Banfield Pet Hospital where deputies confirmed her identity through a chip implant.

The dog’s owner picked her up and surprised her children with a reunion Monday night.

“When they first walked in the door I thought I was dreaming,” Aaron Esau said. “It still kind of feels like a dream, and it’s crazy to believe that Pippin’s back.”

Penelope Whipple, 54, was arrested and charged with felony first-degree theft of a companion animal. She is being held on $10,000 bail.

Whipple has reportedly been charged with similar crimes over the years.
