AUSTIN (KXAN) — A downtown favorite has reopened after an unusual phenomenon forced them to close for the first time in almost a quarter-century.

The Elephant Room had to shut down back on November 13 after a sinkhole opened up. The owner wasn’t sure how long they would be closed — or if they would reopen at all.

It’s the first time they closed their doors since opening in January of 1991.

“It’s been [a jazz club] for 25 years, and hopefully now with these steel reinforcements and the jacks underneath the building it will last another 250 years at least,” says Michael Mordecai.

Michael says crews worked 24/7 to get the Elephant Room back up and running.
