AUSTIN (KXAN) — A three-day march began Wednesday to commemorate the one-year anniversary of President Obama’s executive action on immigration.

The march, called a “pilgrimage” by organizers, was coordinated by the Workers Defense Project and AFL-CIO, among others, and will end in a rally at the Governor’s Mansion Saturday. Organizers expect thousands to join in the rally.

The march started at the immigrant detention facility in Taylor, where protests were held last month.

“Seven hundred and fifty-thousand Texans had the hope of immigration relief taken away from them,” Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt said. She is not the only one in opposition.

“As public leaders, we have a responsibility to approach policies in a way that treat immigrants and all people with dignity and respect,” said Austin City Council Member Delia Garza. “Immigrants who are simply trying to better their lives and give their families access to the opportunity promised by America should not be housed in inhumane detention centers.”

On Saturday, the rally will start at the Workers Defense Project at 5604 Manor Road and end at the Governor’s Mansion at 1010 Colorado Street. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
