AUSTIN (KXAN) – Several homes were evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a gas leak in the 10900 block of Beachmont Lane in Southwest Austin.

Firefighters were called to the area just before 12:30 with reports of a gas smell. Texas Gas Services said a contractor working in the area hit a 2-inch main. Based on wind conditions the Austin Fire Department evacuated eight homes out of precaution. Gas was turned off around 2:20 p.m. and people were allowed back in their homes around 2:45 p.m.
