U.S. (KXAN) — A new report shows the numbers of cases of sexually transmitted diseases were at an all-time high last year.

The CDC reports 1.4 million cases of Chlamydia; that’s the highest yearly total ever for any disease.

Syphilis shot up 15 percent. A total of 19,999 cases were recorded last year.

Gonorrhea also rose significantly with 350,062 cases reported in 2014.

Researchers say the biggest increase is among 15 and 24 year olds.

This has been the highest increase in STD numbers since 2006, according to the study.

The CDC found that women are affected the most, but the numbers of males contracting an STD are also rising. Experts say more efforts are needed to improve screening rates; especially for young women.
