AUSTIN (KXAN) — An inmate who was found unresponsive in his Travis County Jail cell died on Sunday, November 15.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) says on November 10 at around 2:00 a.m., corrections officers found Elijah Ashbey, 21, unresponsive and started CPR on the man.

Austin-Travis County EMS were called to the scene and took Ashbey to the hospital.

He was arrested after midnight on November 8, 2015 after authorities learned he had a warrant for his arrest during a family violence investigation. The warrant was from McLennan County for felony credit card abuse and his bond was set at $15,000, TCSO says.

At about 9:30 a.m. on the day Ashbey was found unresponsive, McLennan County withdrew their warrant and he was released from custody.

The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a suicide. The office says Ashbey hanged himself from a sink. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
