AUSTIN (KXAN) — Judge Julie Kocurek has announced that she will be running for re-election in the Democratic General Primary.
According to Kocurek’s family she is currently in stable condition and continues to improve. A representative for Kocurek’s family said she will return to her duties as a public servant as soon as she is well enough.
Kocurek was shot upon returning home with her son after watching a Friday night football game. A garbage bag had been placed in front of Kocurek’s gated driveway and when her son got out of the car to remove the bag, the shooter fired several shots into the driver’s side window.
28-year-old Chimene Onyeri has been identified as a person of interest in the shooting has been charged with murder in an unrelated case in Houston that happened earlier this year. Court documents show Onyeri was sentenced by Kocurek to three years probation for fraud.
Currently investigating police believe that Kocurek was targeted. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the person who fired several shots at Kocurek while she was in her car was trying to to kill her.
“Investigators absolutely believe the assault was an attempt to murder, an attempt on her life… she was targeted on that attack,” said Acevedo.
Judge Kocurek sends her thanks to everyone who has shown their support for her while she recovers.
