AUSTIN (KXAN) — A quiet Saturday morning watching the sunrise turned into a random and brutal knife attack in Hyde Park. Austin police said a man and a woman were sitting on the sidewalk near 44th and Speedway around 7:30 a.m., just outside the man’s apartment. When he went inside to use the restroom, the woman was randomly attacked, according to her father.
“She kind of looked up, closed her eyes, and then all of the sudden she opens her eyes to someone stabbing her repeatedly.”
To protect the victim, we are not identifying the father. However, he wants everyone to know what happened to his daughter so her attacker may be caught before someone else is injured. He points out the attack happened less than a block from Shipe Park.
“Kids play on their bicycles around here, they play in that park,” he said. “My concern is for the public. I do not want to see this person out on the loose.”
The attacker is described as a woman with dark wavy or curly hair and wearing all dark clothing. No items were taken from the victim.
The father of the victim said his daughter has been in intensive care since the attack and has undergone multiple surgeries for stab wounds across her body, including in her back, possibly suffered as she turned to escape to the nearby apartment.
“She cannot understand how someone could do this, not only to her, but another human being. I cannot get my head around it and neither can she.”
Police have asked for the public’s help in reporting any suspicious activity in the area. The father also urged neighbors for help.
“If you have surveillance cameras in your house, please take a look at them.”
KXAN asked APD why the call for public assistance came three days after the attack. They said requests for public assistance come from the investigating detectives.
