AUSTIN (KXAN) — A University of Texas giant is celebrating a big milestone Thursday night, and raising money for a good cause at the same time.

Edith Royal, the wife of the late legendary University of Texas football coach Darrell Royal, is turning 90.

The birthday bash was thrown by the organization named in honor of her husband who suffered from Alzheimer’s, the Darrell K. Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease. “Everybody that deals with Alzheimer’s knows what a brutal disease it is, and we all pray for a cure someday,” Royal says.

Some special guests, including actor Matthew McConaughey, stopped by her birthday party. Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers performed at the event.

Thursday night’s event is part of a push by the organization to raise $1 million for Alzheimer’s and traumatic brain injury research this year. You can support the organization’s efforts to raise money for research on the fund’s website.
