Family trapped in flash flooding considers themselves lucky to be alive

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One family is counting their blessings after Friday’s flash flooding.

The Aleman family considers themselves lucky to be alive after calling for help as water began flooding around their home on Friday.

“He said, you know, there’s not gonna be a boat coming right now to rescue ya’ll so just sit tight, he said, that’s it,” said Roland Aleman.

As the call ended water began spilling through the Aleman’s back door. In less than two hours the scene in front of their home completely changed as their cars became totally submerged.

As Roland stood in water that was nearly shoulder deep, the reality of three words sank in: It’s too late.

“If it hadn’t stopped raining…we probably could have drowned in there,” Roland said.

Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was luck. But if you ask Tina Aleman, what saved them, it was something more.

“It was my mom’s picture, was coming as I was standing by – holding on to the couch. I saw the picture was floating like she was coming to me. I just got it and grabbed it, my mom,” said Tina, “I couldn’t believe it, the picture was coming straight to me, I couldn’t believe it.”

Tina’s mother died eight years ago. The picture that Tina credits as saving their lives survived as well, along with a case of collectibles she had given her mother over the years before she passed..

“She was with me, haha, yeah. I always feel that she’s with me.”
