Officer injured in East Austin chase

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A lunch break for one man ended up with his truck being stolen and used in a police chase on Thursday afternoon.

The owner of the stolen truck told KXAN News he was eating lunch with his co-worker at a food truck near Highway 183 and Ohlen Road in North Austin when one a male juvenile asked to borrow his phone, then another juvenile jumped in his white pickup truck and took off.

Police found the vehicle and the suspects around 12:38 p.m. in the 1600 block of Grove Boulevard and Riverside Drive. A pursuit ensued and one officer was injured when the suspects crashed into his patrol car. The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. During the chase, the suspects also ran into the signage at Daniel E. Ruiz Library on Grove Boulevard.

Police were able to arrest one suspect immediately after the crash but the second suspect was found a short time later after he ran away.
