AUSTIN (KXAN) –What looks like a rundown warehouse behind a bar in North Austin has been home to several robberies, aggravated assault and other violent calls, according to Austin police. Police say the uptick in crime is due to an illegal game room that has been operating in the area of Rundberg Lane and Middle Fiskville Road.
“We had a robbery here, we’ve had some aggravated assaults. We’re getting lots and lots of calls out here,” explains Lt. Derek Galloway with the Austin Police Department. “We know from patrols and the robbery calls that this is a problem location.”
The Austin Police Department invited KXAN News along on Wednesday afternoon when officers moved in to shut the facility down. Police tell us as Asian woman was running the place, she was taken away in handcuffs, in an ambulance, after she threw up and got sick once officers came through the door. Her name has not been released at this time.
Inside the building, police say they found several women playing the 8-liner machines. Both were cited for illegal gambling.
Austin police say it was a confidential source who told them that players here were being paid cash when winning on the 8-liner machines. It’s illegal to play for cash. But at this operation, even though there are prizes like a coffee maker and a skillet on display, police say it’s all for show and this game room paid out cash
