SXSW cancels two 2016 sessions after threats of violence

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Officials behind the 2016 South by Southwest Interactive festival have made the move to cancel two controversial sessions after numerous threats of violence.

‘SavePoint: A Discussion on the Gaming Community’ and ‘Level Up: Overcoming Harassment in Games,’ both meant to be a “valuable exchange of ideas” related to Gamergate, have been canceled after threats

“Preserving the sanctity of the big tent at SXSW Interactive necessitates that we keep the dialogue civil and respectful,” said SXSW Interactive Director Hugh Forrest. “If people cannot agree, disagree and embrace new ways of thinking in a safe and secure place that is free of online and offline harassment, then this marketplace of ideas is inevitably compromised.”
