Man in custody after East Austin SWAT

SWAT Situation at Neal and Tillery - Chris Nelson/KXAN

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A man armed with a gun was engaged with Austin SWAT Team members in an East Austin field Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the call for assistance came at 2:50 p.m. The caller said a man with a pistol was in a field located near Neal Street and Tillery Street threatening to injure himself. Police took him into custody around 5:20 p.m. after shooting him with a ‘bean bag’ round.

When police arrived they evacuated the immediate area. They said the man was threatening only himself.

During the encounter, police were uncertain if the man actually had a gun but acted with caution while speaking with him. The man was contained to a small area of the field and talked to a negotiator through a bomb robot. They found that he did have one when they arrested him.

Police said he made demands but would not elaborate on them.

Police do not anticipate filing criminal charges on the man stating, if he needs mental health assistance, he will receive it. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
