AUSTIN (KXAN) — BEVO XIV, the University of Texas mascot, is being retired effective immediately, according to the University of Texas athletics department Tuesday afternoon.
The longhorn steer has been diagnosed with Bovine Leukemia Virus. Following a preliminary diagnosis of the illness last week, a decision was made to retire him from his current role. He will remain on his ranch as the selection process for BEVO XV begins, the university says.
“BEVO XIV is a special animal,” said Ricky Brennes, Executive Director of the Silver Spurs and BEVO XIV’s regular travelling partner. “He truly embraced his role and loved engaging with people at games and special events, and at his ranch – where he will continue to live – he was clearly the leader of the herd.“
The Silver Spurs Alumni Association will lead the search for the new University of Texas mascot.
