AUSTIN (KXAN) — The memorial service for Westlake High School coach Mark Hurst has been moved due to an “overwhelming show of support,” according to Eanes ISD.

The service was originally to be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, but will now be held at the larger St. John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 5455 Bee Cave Road in Austin. The scheduled time and day for the service remains the same: Monday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m.

The family says they are “deeply sorry” for any inconvenience the move may have caused, but feel humbled by the outpouring of support. They also expressed thanks to both churches for their willingness to help the family.

Hurst passed away Sunday, October 4 from cancer. He was 59 years old.

The coach began teaching at Westlake High School in 1979 and was promoted to head track & field coach in 1987. Hurst is one of the most successful track & field coaches in Texas, leading the Chaparrals to 15 district championships during his 28-year tenure.
