Breaking the bank paying ATM fees

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new report released today finds ATM fees and overdraft fees have reached record highs.

Bankrate.com says the average fee for using an ATM outside of your bank rose to a record $4.52 per transaction. That is a 21 percent increase over the past five years.

The average overdraft fee has also set a new record at $33.07. The increased fee has risen nine percent since 2010.

ATM and overdraft fees vary for each city. Bankrate also released a list of the cities with the cheapest ATM rates; so it may be time to consider moving to:

  • Kansas City, Missouri ATM fee: $2.55
  • Cincinnati: $2.61
  • Pittsburgh: $2.70
  • Baltimore: $2.75
  • Chicago: $2.75
  • Philadelphia: $2.75
  • St. Louis: $2.75
