AUSTIN (KXAN) — Culinary students at Austin High School celebrated World Teachers’ Day on Monday by creating a gourmet meal for 200 teachers and staff.

On the menu: grilled flank steak with Peruvian mashed potatoes and yellow chile sauce. A cafe on campus serves as the base of operations for Austin High’s culinary program, where students serve meals for teachers throughout the year and cater special events.

The students used gift cards donated by H-E-B to purchase the food. “Educators work small miracles with students every day that often go unnoticed. World Teachers’ Day gives us an opportunity to stop and recognize those accomplishments, and to let educators know how much we truly value and appreciate the work they do,” said Jill Reynolds, public affairs manager for H-E-B.

More than 100 countries have celebrated World Teachers’ Day since 1994, in an effort to mobilize international support for the critical role that teachers play in societies across the globe.
